Making Bolts

A bolt is a fastener used in many applications to tie things together. Bolts are types of screws in that they have heads on one side. The difference is that the other ends are not tapered like in conventional screws. A bolt comes with a matching nut where it is rotated into to tighten the fastening. Bolts are designed differently to meet specific purposes. The bolt used on a stainless steel pipe seamless construction is not the same one that would be used on a swing set or bed. Types of Bolts


The numerous industries that bolts serve required that the tools are made in different designs to suit particular requirements.


Anchor bolts are used in masonry to fasten objects to concrete. The structural applications of anchor bolts are varied for constructing residential homes to dams. This type of rivet has to be extremely strong to support the weight of the structures held together. Common anchor bolts have hooks on one end.


An elevator bolt has a countersunk head and is used in conveyor systems. The undercut part of the bolt is squared, which is how the nut stays in place.


T-bolts are designed in the shape of a 'T' and are used in profiles with slots. They rotate into position and are easily be gripped with a wrench. T-bolts can withstand resistance and vibrations.


Hex bolts come with six-sided head and are suitable for various applications such as constructing highway structures and fruiters.


A roof bolt suits mine roofs as it is made to fit into a pre-drilled hole. The head and the axis of the shank are counter-balanced such that when the bolt rotates, the shafts drills a circle with a bigger diameter than the head.


Carriage bolts are other basic types that are used to bond metal and wooden parts. They have squared undercuts that help to tighten the nuts.


Use of Bolts


The applications for bolts vary widely from everyday household objects to complex machinery. Their biggest task is joining two parts, which can be concrete, metal, wood or other materials. Any application that has a through-hole design can use a bolt for fastening from large-scale construction to home repair to assembly. Almost always, a bolt has to be used with a nut to tighten or loosen it.


How Bolts are Made


A bolt has a head that allows different types of tools like wrenches to be used to apply or resist torque. There is the shank, which is the threaded length of the bolt. The number of helical threads on the shank depends on the type of rivet. A bolt also has a bevelled edge called a chamfer, which is where it enters the surface to be fastened. Various materials are used for bolt construction, and these include aluminium, stainless steel, titanium, brass, copper alloys and hardened steel. Some applications, however, require more delicate materials like plastic or fibreglass.


The slew of material choices and design options for bolt construction make them appropriate for many uses from joining stainless steel pipe combinations to children's toys.
